What does it mean to live in a "smart city?” “Smart” things are good things, are they not? Cities that are driven by this type of technology can certainly offer perks, like easy-to-find parking spaces and free WiFi hot spots, but there is more to these tech-saturated cities than meets the eye.
Behind all of the promises of safety, efficiency, and sustainability there are serious threats to privacy and other civil liberties. There is also money to be made by those who manufacture the tech and gather and control the data. Cities are wildly jumping on the smart-city bandwagon with little to no consideration for possible abuse or unforeseen consequences.
In this segment of the documentary, tech experts, privacy champions, and freedom advocates help to define the term “smart city” and start the discussion about some of the underlying issues surrounding these initiatives.
